What To Pack for Summer Horse Camp
Apparel for the Rider
Outerwear
Summer horse camp will involve you and your equine friend being out in the elements. That being said, you need to be prepared. A lightweight jacket can help keep you warm on cooler nights, and a raincoat will keep you dry if it rains during your camp.
Helmet
You will have lots of opportunities to ride during your horse camp. A helmet is a necessary item to pack for camp. Properly fitting helmets provide the most important protection for riders.
Boots
Riding boots protect a rider’s feet from the brush as you ride and serious injury from the stirrup. Choose a broken-in pair of boots for summer horse camp. You do not want to experience rubbing or blisters during your week away. If rain is in the forecast, you may benefit from packing two pairs of boots.
Gloves
While gloves are not necessary for all riding experiences, riding for a week straight is a different situation. Holding the reins all day may cause blisters and calluses. Gloves can help prevent injury to your hands from the reins and brush.
Horse Care Supplies
Grooming Kit
You will pack essentials for yourself and must also pack essentials for your horse. With so much riding and travel, a grooming kit is mandatory. Before you leave, put a kit together including:
- Curry comb
- Hoof pick
- Body brush
- Mane and tail comb
- Sweat scraper
Tack Cleaning Products
Your tack will face all the elements you do. To keep it in top condition, pack some tack-cleaning products. You should wipe down your tack nightly to remove any dust or debris.
Fly Spray
Summer horse camp will be held when the weather is the hottest. With that kind of heat, you are sure to experience insects. Like us, horses are irritated by the buzzing of flies. A good fly spray can keep your horse comfortable throughout your camp.
Outdoor Essentials
Sleeping Bag
If you will be sleeping outside during your camp visit, you must pack a sleeping bag. Choose one appropriate for the weather. Many sleeping bags roll up easily and can be attached to your saddle.
Flashlight and First Aid
As you ride trails, you will want to be prepared. Having a pack of first aid and safety equipment can protect you if something happens. A flashlight is a great addition to this kit in case you need to move around in the woods in the dark.
Accessories
Water Bottle
Plan water breaks for your horse during your trail rides. Additionally, pack a water bottle for your refreshment. A reusable water bottle can help keep you hydrated and is easy to carry in any backpack.
Camera
Horse camp is a lot of fun; a camera will help you capture those memories. Many cameras are durable in the elements now. You are already set if you have a smartphone with a good camera.
Sunscreen
Do not let the sun get in the way of your fun. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin.
