Preparing for Long Trail Rides

Preparing for Long Trail Rides

Essential Gear and Equipment

Select the Right Horse

For long-haul riders, having a reliable teammate is crucial. Choosing the right horse for your ride is one of the most important decisions you will make. Temperament can also play a role here. While many people enjoy riding high-energy horses, if this is not your preference, make sure you keep your horse’s temperament in mind. You will be encountering all sorts of things on the trail and need to keep a level head. Additionally, you need a horse conditioned for longer rides, various terrains, and surprises along the trail.

Saddle and Tack Essentials

Comfortable and durable tack equipment is a must on the trail. Broken or uncomfortable equipment miles from home or help can quickly become a dangerous situation. Choose a saddle that is comfortable for both your horse and yourself. Equipment should always be checked for proper fit. As your horse gains or loses muscles, the shape of their back can change, requiring additional padding, etc, to ensure the proper fit.

Protective Gear for Rider and Horse

While on the trail, you will be navigating through difficult terrain and managing obstacles. Riders should have a helmet, gloves, and sturdy boots to protect them against impacts and abrasions. Many riders also opt for protective vests in cross-country. These come in a variety of sizes and materials. Some are even inflatable! Additionally, your horse should wear protective boots to prevent injuries.

Conditioning

Long-haul rides expend a lot of energy for you and your horse. Training and conditioning in advance is an absolute must. Would you go run a marathon after sitting on the couch for 6 months? It is the same for your horse. Take time to train them over distances at various speeds, and over different obstacles.

Nutrition and Hydration

Rider Nutrition Strategies

Long-haul rides can last several hours or even an entire day. Therefore, you need to plan appropriately for snacks and meals. Always bring water to stay hydrated. Pack food that will give you a lot of energy, such as energy bars, fruit, and other healthy snacks. If you plan to camp on your journey, prepare food that needs to be cooked.

Horse Feeding and Hydration

Just like you, your horse needs access to water and food. Always feed your horse a balanced diet of hay, grain, and electrolytes. Plan intentional stops for your horse to drink water before continuing your ride.

For shorter rides, you do not need to pack food for your horse. But, if you plan to be gone for more than the day, bring all the food your horse needs to keep his energy up.

Route Planning and Strategy

You must plan your route in advance. This will allow you to plan rest stops, watering, and food. Finally, consider the weather conditions. Both horses and riders need to be prepared for any type of weather. Dress appropriately and bring items to keep your horse healthy and comfortable, especially if it is going to rain.
