Fall Favorites: 5 Treats Horses Love (That Are Actually Safe)

Pumpkin spice might be for people, but fall is a treat season for horses, too.

And while apples and carrots are classics, there are a few other fun snacks your horse might love as long as they’re fed in moderation and with a little common sense.

🍌 Bananas

Yes, horses can eat bananas, even the peel.

They’re full of potassium and soft enough for easy chewing, especially for older horses with dental issues.

🎃 Pumpkin

Raw or cooked, pumpkin is totally safe for horses.

Just skip the stem, skin, and seeds. It’s high in fiber and can be a fun seasonal swap for apples.

🍉 Watermelon

It might feel like a summer fruit, but horses love it.

Both the flesh and the rind are safe in small amounts. Just make sure it’s seedless or scoop them out.

🍠 Sweet Potatoes

Unseasoned, raw sweet potatoes (in small chunks) can be a fiber-rich snack.

Skip anything cooked with butter, oil, or spices. Those are for humans only.

🍞 Stale Bread

Hear us out. Plain, unsweetened bread that’s gone a little dry can be a fun, crunchy snack.

As long as your horse doesn’t have metabolic issues, a small piece here or there is totally fine.

A Few Quick Reminders!

Always feed new treats slowly and in moderation.

Skip anything moldy, overly sugary, or processed.

And when in doubt, check with your vet, especially for horses with special dietary needs.

Happy snacking, and don't be surprised if your horse starts giving you the side-eye every time they hear a crinkle. 🐴🍂
